Hang up and Hike It’s disconcerting enough that 82.5% of the world’s population has an extra appendage attached to their ears. Cell pones, schmell phones. But it’s a real crime to summit a 14er and see half the folks calling their old roommates from college twenty years ago yelling, “you’ll never guess where I am!” Jeezus, tell ‘em when you get down already. You’re no ET, and this is not a phone call home.
There are Last Frontier kinds of places where modern technology simply doesn’t belong. Bhutan, the jungles of Borneo, and the backcountry to name a few.
What ever happened to self-reliance? What happened to taking a topo and compass enhanced by wits and common sense into the wilderness? Have we completely whitewashed the essence of adventure and take unnecessary risks because rescue is only 911 away? If so, then the Great Backcountry Con has begun.....
