Farewell to Sliding on the Cheap

Well, cherished readers, it’s time for Martha to say goodbye. She’s spending her powder days deep in the backcountry this season, far from the madding crowds, far from computer screens and the Internet. But before going, here are some simple words of advice for you:

There’s more to riding than finding out where the cheapest discount lift tickets are.

Love the mountains. They are the last vestige of what is good, true, and honest about this land. They won’t take sides, won’t argue politics, will treat you the same as they treat the next guy. Take care of them. Respect them. The forests and glaciers are a dying natural resource, so enjoy them while you can. Introduce someone who’s never seen the clear air, bright stars, and bluebird skies to the vastness of it all. Take a child snowshoeing in the forest. Make snowballs and throw them at each other. Bring an extra pair of mittens and give them to someone whose hands are cold. Pick up your trash. Pick up someone else’s trash. Dance wildly at midnight to invoke the Snow Gods for fresh powder. Sit in the snow at alpenglow and soak up the incredible silence.....
